Adoptics is a private medical device company focused on developing a novel accommodating intraocular lens (AIOL) to treat cataract and presbyopia. Cataract is a clouding of the eye’s crystalline lens. Presbyopia is a vision condition in which the patient looses the ability to focus on close objects. It is a natural part of the aging process of the eye and affects most of us over 40 years of age. Adoptics AIOL is based on a proprietary technology that uses a novel optical system to focus light on the retina. The nature of this unique refractive system allows the implant to mimic the natural accommodation process of a young eye. The increase of focusing power in the Adoptics lens is achieved through a steepening of the optic’s curvature in response to the natural accommodative forces in the eye. A significant change in refractive power can be achieved with the application of minute forces and without the need for movement of the IOL.
Adoptics IOL will be implanted through a small incision using the same surgical technique as conventional intraocular lenses and will restore youthful vision to cataract and presbyopic patients. The technology also has the potential to address the problem of loss of vision due to other ocular diseases such as macular degeneration.
