BETIC (Biomedical Engineering and Technology Innovation Centre) at IIT Bombay is a multi-disciplinary research and development network established in 2014. It focuses on creating indigenous, reliable, and affordable medical devices to meet critical healthcare needs in India. BETIC operates as a collaborative ecosystem that connects government, academia, medical professionals, industry, and investors to foster innovation in medical technology. The center at IIT Bombay is equipped with advanced facilities for 3D scanning, CAD/CAM, 3D printing, and mechanical testing. BETIC has identified over 450 unmet clinical needs through engagement with doctors and has developed around 240 medical device concepts, resulting in 25 developed devices and 240 prototypes. The center has also filed numerous patents and incubated startups, bringing 43 devices to market. Its innovations, such as smart stethoscopes and diabetic checkup devices, aim to enhance healthcare accessibility, particularly in underserved areas. BETIC is recognized as India’s only ISO 13485-certified academic lab for medical devices, highlighting its commitment to quality and regulatory standards.
