The Bubble PAPR is a collaboration between Manchester University Foundation Trust, Designing Science and Manchester University to re-invent the Powered Air-Purifying Respirator for the Covid era.
Doctors in the Intensive Therapy Unit at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester have developed Bubble PAPR, a Powered Air-Purifying Respirator to keep healthcare workers safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This simple and low-cost device consists of a reusable collar that sits around the neck and a single-use plastic hood that can be easily recycled. The collar contains a fan to draw in air through a virus filter and blow it out in front of the wearers face. Bubble PAPR has been designed to be compatible with stringent infection control practices and comfortable to wear for the duration of a shift in the ITU. It leaves the wearers face free to allow good communication between front line staff and with patients.
