Calces IO is a start-up developing a method for screening hospitalized patients for malnourishment without using human resources.
Around 1 in 5 patients admitted to hospitals are malnourished. This negatively affects patient morbidity, mortality and length of the hospital admission. The Danish Health Authorities (SST) estimate that malnourished patients cost Denmark upwards of 6 billion dkk per year. In England, the costs of malnourished patients is estimated to be £19 billion, or upwards of 15% of total healthcare costs. To try and alleviate this problem in Denmark, clinical guidelines from SST dictate that all patients should be screened for malnourishment when they enter hospital and be given relevant nutritional interventions.
In spite of these guidelines, a minority of patients are actually screened. Numbers vary between hospitals and wards, but as an example, in 2019 at Herlev Hospital only 21% of patients were screened per the guidelines. Of the screened patients, even fewer are given the relevant nutritional interventions.
We want to change that.
Combining traditional screening approaches with Machine Learning algorithms, we are able to automatize the screening process. This allows us to screen more patients using less resources.
