For the last two decades, electrical neurostimulation has been an established therapy widely used as a last resort for patients with various neurological and psychiatric illnesses. Typically in cases where pharmacological options have been exhausted and where neurostimulation offers a more reversible option compared for example to surgical lesioning of the brain. Today this technology is used in Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) and Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS), however, all have limitations that prevent a broader usage.
