Developing Innovative Cooling Therapy Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder that can affect people of all ages across the globe. Epilepsy and seizures affect over 3 million Americans. Unfortunately 30% of patients with epilepsy do not respond adequately to current treatments. Cerene Biomedics is developing an implantable medical device to help this refractory population stop epileptic seizures by cooling the surface of the brain. Brain cooling has been shown to be a safe and effective means to stop seizures when applied locally to the seizure focus. This device will provide first line therapy for epilepsy patients with a seizure focus on the neocortex.
