About
Conceptus Inc. was an American medical products manufacturer based in Mountain View, California, specializing in innovative device-based solutions for permanent birth control. Founded in 1992, the company developed micro-catheter and guidewire systems that provided non-incisional access to the fallopian tubes. Its flagship product, Essure, offered a non-incisional alternative to traditional tubal ligation, eliminating the need for cutting or burning. Essure was approved by the US FDA in 2002 and was marketed in various countries, establishing Conceptus as a leader in the permanent birth control device market. In 2013, Conceptus was acquired by Bayer AG for approximately $1.1 billion, becoming a fully owned subsidiary. At the time of the acquisition, Conceptus employed around 300 people and reported net sales of about $141 million in 2012. The acquisition aimed to integrate Conceptus's innovative solutions into Bayer's healthcare portfolio, focusing on research and improving quality of life in women's reproductive health.
