CuffWay LLC
About
CuffWay is an innovative medical device designed to automatically control endotracheal tube cuff pressures. Developed by a first-year undergraduate student at the University of South Carolina, CuffWay was born out of a passion for preventative care and a concern for the widespread injuries caused by one of medicine's most common procedures: intubation. Performed nearly 20 million times each year in the U.S., intubation often results in tracheal injuries, piration, and ventilator-associated pneumonia due to poor cuff pressure management, with 72% of patients receiving unsafe pressures. CuffWay addresses this critical gap by offering a fully automated, easy-to-use system that adjusts cuff pressure dynamically, reducing complications and improving clinical safety. With interest from clinicians, early hospital partnerships forming in South Carolina, and backing through a provisional patent, national awards, and clinical advisors, CuffWay is poised to set a new standard in airway management. It has proof of concept to reduce tracheal related injuries, reduces provider workload, saves money for hospitals through reimbursement and a reusable design, and reduces costs for patients. As medicine shifts from reactive treatments to proactive care, CuffWay represents the kind of patient-focused, data-driven innovation that healthcare needs—one that improves outcomes, reduces risk, and has the potential to benefit millions of patients across the country and around the world.
