During the Covid-19 crisis, acute shortages of PPE like face masks revealed that our foreign sourcing of goods is unfit to deal with a prolonged pandemic or other widespread, long-lasting crisis. Not only is it risky to rely on overseas suppliers during an emergency, the failure of offshore producers to maintain safety and quality-control standards puts lives at risk.
