Likvor AB has an instrument for assessing the dynamics of CSF (Cerebrospinal fluid) system, to support diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, NPH, as well as for follow-up after surgical treatment. The instrument can also be used when checking shunt functionality.
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) is a treatable syndrome caused by disturbances in the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), leading to symptoms often misdiagnosed and subsequently also mistreated as one of the dementia related diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Treatment of NPH and other similar CSF-related neurological disorders is the insertion of a CSF shunt, which acts as a valve to regulate the flow of CSF in the brain to alleviate symptoms caused by irregularity of CSF dynamics. To date, correct diagnosis and monitoring has been impaired due to the lack of effective tools and tests for assessing CSF dynamics in such patients. Investigations have been limited to mostly non-standardized, non-commercial methods, making it difficult to gather, compare and summarize data obtained by research or clinical investigations
Studies indicate that 10% of all patients diagnosed with dementia and only one in five get the correct diagnose. In Sweden it is estimated that over 15 000 Swedes suffer from the disease – most of them unnecessarily. In the U.S., the corresponding figure is well over 700 000. As clinical understanding and the relevance of CSF dynamics increase, a standardized assay and monitoring system of this kind will become indispensable.
