About

LumenAstra was formed in 2020 to commercialize patents from the Univ of Colorado for a non-invasive, wearable deep-tissue temperature sensor with applications in surgery, intensive care, military, athletics and consumer markets. Our beachhead application is monitoring brain temperature during the deep cooling required for aortic arch surgery, one of the most dangerous procedures with a 17% mortality rate. Replacing highly invasive nasal or bladder sensors which lag brain temperature, our sensor can help cut surgical and time-at-cold by 15-20 minutes, possibly reducing mortality by 20%. We have SBIRs with the USARMY for a wireless version of our sensor that would provide early warning of heat stress which claims thousands of casualties annually for warfighters in training and deployed in the field. Future applications include warning of heat stress for first responders, particularly firefighters, and athletes. We also have a stragic partner in the consumer market for a novel device replacing infrared forehead scanners which are susceptible to false positive and false negative readings due to effects of the environment. We are 7-for-7 (knock on wood!) in highly competitive grant awards raising $3.3M non-dilutive funding from NSF, USARMY and the State of Colorado.
