MWE was created in 1952 by Stanley Broggio, with Andrew Broggio the current Chairman and CEO. For over half a century, MWE has launched innovative products such as Transwab®, Virocult®, Sigma-Swab® (∑-Swab®) and the Sigma range called ∑-VCM® to help microbiologists and other diagnostic professionals obtain the high quality specimens essential for accurate investigations.
In 1975, MWE launched Transwab®. This was the first complete, ready-to-use transport swab kit, complete with swab and a tube of semi-solid transport medium, suitable for all micro-organisms. This was followed by Virocult®, with a medium dedicated to virus isolation.
We have now launched our new ∑-MM which rapidly kills pathogens making the specimen safe within seconds, but preserving DNA and RNA for full molecular analysis. A powerful reagent based liquid medium, safe and stable for transport at ambient temperature. Effective for mycobacteria, viruses (including SARS-Cov-2), and bacteria. Nucleuses are inactivated, while DNA and RNA remain intact.
Other innovations for the food and pharmaceutical industries include:
a. NRS Transwab® and the new NRS II™ rinse swabs
b. Polywipe™ sponge swabs for the measurement of residual contamination on disinfected surfaces
c. A range of Isolation Transwabs® for the easy detection of common pathogens (such as listeria and coliforms) in food production environments.
