Open Source Ventilator

Open Source Ventilator Ireland (OSV) is a volunteer-driven initiative established on March 16, 2020, to develop open-source, low-cost mechanical ventilators in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The project began with the creation of the Field Emergency Ventilator (FEV) and has since expanded to include various COVID-related medical devices. OSV is a collaborative effort involving engineers, designers, medical professionals, and volunteers from around the world. The core product is an open-source mechanical ventilator designed for affordability and robustness, suitable for intensive care unit (ICU) use. It incorporates the Bag Valve Mask (BVM) and utilizes both 3D printing and traditional manufacturing methods. The designs are freely available, allowing hospitals, healthcare centers, and governments to produce these ventilators without licensing fees. OSV emphasizes accessibility and local production, particularly in regions facing shortages during health crises. The initiative also collaborates with international partners for clinical testing and validation, promoting transparency and the ethos of open-source hardware development.
