About
Pixium Vision S.A. was a French company focused on bioelectronics and brain-machine interface technology, founded in 2011 and based in Paris. The company aimed to develop bionic vision systems to help restore partial visual perception for individuals who lost their sight due to retinal diseases. It specialized in neuromodulation applications and was a spin-out from the Vision Institute and Université Pierre et Marie Curie. The key product of Pixium Vision was the PRIMA system, a wireless sub-retinal implant designed to provide artificial vision. This implant works by stimulating remaining retinal cells using infrared light projected from special glasses. The technology was particularly aimed at assisting patients with late-stage macular degeneration and other severe vision loss conditions. Pixium Vision also developed the earlier IRIS I system, which entered clinical trials in 2013. The company raised over $111 million in funding from notable European venture capital firms. Pixium Vision ceased operations in January 2024, with its intellectual property acquired by Science Corporation for further development.
