RareLung AI

RareLung AI is a Research and Development project, led by University College Dublin with data consolidated from globally recognized clinical researchers, to build Artificial Intelligence systems to analyse and screen Chest CT scans to detect and quantify Diffuse Cystic Lung Disease. Early identification of DCLDs is essential but difficult. DCLDs are often missed or misidentified as emphysema. As a DCLD patient can lose 10% or more lung function in a year this misidentification has a crucial impact on outcome, mortality and treatment costs. Although DCLDs are progressive for many patients there are therapeutics which will suppress progression, dramatically improving quality of life and reducing healthcare delivery costs associated with chronic progression by 60-90%. The globally unique annotated data repository created by RareLungAI through collaboration with our lung disease research center collaborators is growing daily and our team of radiologists and AI engineers are applying deep learning to gain insights both in the targeted Diffuse Cystic Lung Diseases but also in control case diseases such as emphysema. In the current phase we are working on lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis (PLCH), Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD) and lymphoid interstitial pneumonia (LIP). Our ultimate purpose is to provide a certified solution which can be seamlessly deployed within existing radiology workflows to catch cases early and additionally support treatment and therapeutics development through quantitative analysis of disease progression.
