Saccadous, Inc. is a digital health startup dedicated to providing a non-invasive platform (hardware, software and analytics) for diagnosing, tracking and advancing the treatment of neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and related movement disorders. This is done through the capture and analysis of involuntary eye-movements, called microsaccades.
During visual fixation, the eyes are never completely still, but produce small involuntary movements, called “fixational eye movements,” including microsaccades, drift, and tremor. The research and intellectual property (IP) we have licensed has proven that the many microsaccade attributes, when compared, show patterns that can be used to identify and differentiate subjects.
Saccadous, Inc. was founded and awarded initial funding in January 2014, through the ASU “Furnace” Technology Transfer Accelerator. Furnace is an innovative startup accelerator designed to form, incubate and launch new companies. Saccadous selected, competed and won the Furnace competition using eye movement technology and IP from Dignity Health.
The Saccadous solution is mobile & non-invasive, engineered to function on a mobile device and architected to leverage a global API accessible cloud-based infrastructure. The intelligence (algorithms) sits in the cloud and provides near real-time analytics and modeling. Big Data can and will make health care better.
This research adds involuntary eye movements as a new evidence-based data source. Medicine has entered its digital age, mobile technologies, sensors, and advances in analytics make it possible to capture and decipher vast amounts of information. The sum of this information will transform healthcare and clinical research, transforming a field aimed at treating the average patient into one that’s much more customized.
