The company began in 1971 operating as Spectronic Analytical Instruments. In its early years it purely serviced instruments. Its reputation for quality and service grew to such an extent that a number of leading manufacturers invited Spectronic to be their UK distributors. One of these was Cambridge based Camspec, manufacturers of the leading range of UV/VIS spectrophotometers.
