Impella

Impella is a heart pump technology developed by Impella CardioSystems AG and acquired by Abiomed in 2005. It is known as the world’s smallest heart pump, designed to support heart function by allowing the heart to rest and recover. The technology utilizes the principle of Archimedes' screw pump to move blood from the left ventricle to the aorta, aiding circulation during heart failure or high-risk cardiac procedures. As part of Abiomed, which focuses on advanced heart support technologies, Impella includes various models such as Impella 2.5, Impella 5.5, and Impella BTR. These devices are minimally invasive and provide temporary circulatory support for patients experiencing acute myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, and other critical cardiac events.
