Nano-Micro Manufacturing Facility (NMMF)

The Nano-Micro Manufacturing Facility (NMMF) is a component of the SA research Infrastructure Roadmap initiative, established by the SA Department of Science and Innovation. Its primary purpose is to provide support to technology developers, both in the industrial sector and at research institutions, to enhance the technology readiness level of their devices. The NMMF comprises five distinct nodes, each with a unique focus, serving as a collaborative hub to foster innovation. Central to the NMMF's mission is it's dedication to advancing a wide range of converging technologies. • The Electrochemical Sensor Node, located at the University of the Western Cape, specialises in the development of electrochemical sensors. These sensors find applications in areas such as environmental monitoring, healthcare diagnostics, and industrial quality control. • The Biosensor Node, situated at the University of Stellenbosch, is dedicated to the creation of biosensors. These biosensors are designed to enable quicker and more cost-effective disease detection, particularly at the point of care (POC), thereby improving medical diagnostics. • The Paper-Based Diagnostics Node, based at Rhodes University, concentrates on the development of straightforward yet efficient lateral-flow diagnostic platforms which facilitate rapid and accessible testing in various contexts. • The Printed Electronics Node, located at the University of Pretoria, focuses on the innovation of printed electronics. These electronics have potential applications in smart devices, wearables, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. • The LOC (Lab-on-a-Chip) Node, situated at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), is dedicated to the development of miniature integrated systems. These systems combine various laboratory functions onto a single chip, transforming both medical diagnostics and scientific research processes.
