Progia Medical is dedicated to addressing dysphagia, a condition affecting individuals with various underlying health issues, including neurological disorders, aging, and cancer treatments. Over 11 million cases are diagnosed annually in the US alone. Progia introduced the first technically enhanced dysphagia therapy system to the market, measuring tongue strength and significantly improving the health and quality of life for individuals with dysphagia. The Swallow Therapy System ™(STS™) offers customized treatment plans based on each patient's unique swallowing issues and improves swallowing musculatures. Many individuals could benefit from a device-assisted product such as the STS™ from Progia Medical. With over 100,000 people diagnosed with dysphagia in the VA, it is estimated that more than 25% of them could benefit from the STS™ device. In addition, 19% of the US population is estimated to be over the age of 65 by 2030, with a prevalence rate over 2%, the need is critical for advanced solutions. Formed in early 2023, Progia Medical's co-founders, Ross Dunbar (CEO) and Gary Graham (COO), acquired the foundational technology for the STS™. The groundbreaking research for the STS™ was conducted by Dr. JoAnne Robbins, PhD, and her team at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health, in collaboration with the Madison VA Hospital. Their work assessed the relationship between tongue pressure and swallowing ability using isometric progressive resistive exercise to enhance swallowing safety and decrease dysphagia severity.
