SIMCharacters is a medical technology company based in Vienna, founded in 2012 by Dr. Jens-Christian Schwindt. The company specializes in developing high-fidelity patient simulators for neonatal and pediatric care. It originated as a spin-off from the Medical University of Vienna, combining expertise in neonatology, biomedical engineering, and software development to create advanced simulation tools that enhance training for healthcare professionals. The flagship product, Paul, is the world’s first high-emotion preterm infant simulator, designed to replicate a 27-week-old premature baby with remarkable realism. This simulator allows healthcare teams to practice critical care procedures safely. SIMCharacters also offers Emily and Emma, term newborn simulators introduced in 2024, which further support training in neonatal intensive care units. Their products are utilized in over 150 neonatal units globally, aiming to improve clinical skills and responses in high-stakes medical situations. In 2025, SIMCharacters was acquired by Laerdal Medical, integrating its innovative simulators into a broader portfolio of healthcare education solutions while maintaining its development operations in Vienna.
